Playing Racial Politics: The Identity Negotiations of Being Black and Nerdy

Over on Medium, I wrote about my “origin story” and how growing up in the “inner city,” education policies and media representation of black masculinity shaped me as a critic and gamer. Writing this was WAY outside my comfort zone – no theories or critical analyses to hide behind (that wordy title notwithstanding), just me opening up and, most importantly, recommitting myself to analyzing the politics in video games. It’s been very well received, making me think I’m getting closer to freeing myself from the Grip of the Academy and becoming more concrete, self-reflexive and material in my writing.
